London Girl Brunches: Kalifornia Kitchen

Haven’t heard of Kalifornia Kitchen? Have you been living under a rock? ICYMI, the pink-hued vegan restaurant opened up in Fitzrovia back in November and has been something of a staple on Instagram feeds ever since. So naturally, I had to grab my veggie mate and get my ass down to see what all the fuss is about.

Staying true to its Instagrammable reputation, the restaurant is filled with pink stairs, flower walls and photogenic seating. Making our way up to the first floor, we left the open-kitchen and packed restaurant for a more chilled out and swanky setting. Benches are swapped for plush seating, white walls and airy windows offering a view out onto Fitzrovia.

Kicking off with a couple of healthy shots (paired with booze, of course), we found it difficult to choose mains. Everything looked intriguing, but in the end it was down to a couple of Klassic Kalifornia burgers and a trio of saucy pulled jackfruit tacos to share. Stacking the moreish Moving Mountains B12 patty with vegan smoked gouda, salad and a top-secret sauce, this has got to be the best vegan burger I’ve ever tried. Yep.

Another insta-favourite, I opted for the CBD latte – though this time, it was more style over substance. The earthy flavour overwhelmed the latte and I wished I’d gone for my pal’s regular coffee. Luckily, Buckwheat and banana pancakes swooped in to save the day. The perfect ending to a hearty brunch, they were topped with coconut yoghurt, caramelised bananas and almond brittle.

With so many restaurants popping up all over social media, it’s hard to tell the weak from the strong. Kalifornia Kitchen may boast feed-clogging interiors and millennial pink tones for basic bitches like me, but the menu is far from basic. If you’re after style and substance, with plant-based feasting that’s worth a taste, then this is your place.
