Escape From London: Hitchin Lavender Fields

Hello Londoners!

Thought I’d shake things up and write about a lil trip I took this week…not to a restaurant or bar! Summer is almost over * c r y c r y * and we had a few days of great weather so I took my mum and head out to the Lavender Fields at Cadwell Farm in Hitchin.

Only a 50 minute drive from our North London pad, Hitchin was a welcome break from the usual jaunts in the big smoke which normally include hopping on the tube, walking round tourist-filled streets and drinking in a busy bar while waiting for a table at some new eatery…

I mean just look at that scenery 😍 …and yes the sky really was that blue!

We spent almost 2 hours walking around and picking lavender. I must admit that my fear of insects meant that I was mostly swatting bees and wasps and in constant fear of the buzzing round my head, but it was still a lovely way to spend the afternoon 😂

Unfortunately we had come quite late in the season, so the lavender was beginning to dry up, the poppy section was almost gone and the sunflower patch was looking rather dismal! But fear not, the cafe was ready to make up for this with an incredible selection of freshly made cakes to satisfy my sweet tooth. This post wouldn’t be right without a mention of food so feast your eyes on my banana and chocolate chip cake below 👅👅👅

It’s clear to see why Hitchin Lavender see tens of thousands visit their fields each summer. This was such a cute day out – everything was lovely – from the lavender picking to the gift shop filled with lavender products and delicious food. Entry is only £5 and includes a bag to fill with cuttings from the field. If you don’t drive, the train is easy to get so try something new while it’s sunny this weekend!
